I’ve lived on South Orange County for over 20 years and I like to think that I know the area pretty well so it’s always a pleasure to discover something new.
A park, a hiking trail or in this case a grocery store.
I had to meet a client in Lake Forest last week and was having a little trouble finding his office – code for I was lost.
I was also hot and thirsty. I made what ended up being a very fortuitous right turn of off El Toro Rd. and found myself in front of Sultan Marketplace in Lake Forest.
I’d never seen or heard of the place before but I needed directions and a bottle of water. What I found inside was one of the most amazing grocery stores I’ve ever walked into.
Sultan Marketplace specializes in organic produce, fresh meats, fresh seafood and Halal Foods. For those of you who don’t know what Halal Foods are (as I didn’t).
Halal Foods are foods that are allowed under Islamic dietary guidelines. In Arabic, the word halal means permitted or lawful.

I love to eat and I try to eat healthy as much as possible. That means lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I also like to try different types of food whenever possible. Well Sultan Market was a treasure trove of new foods and spices for me. Now remember I’m lost and on my way to a meeting so I grab a bottle of water but 15 minutes later find that I have wandered almost every aisle in this incredible store.
The vegetables were so fresh that they almost didn’t look real. The meat and fish seemed superb and honestly there were tons of other packaged foods in there that I had no clue what they were but looked very interesting.
Knowing my meeting would run a couple of hours I didn’t buy any fruit or veggies because I had no way to keep them cool but as soon as I got home I Googled Sultan Marketplace and found their web site and even better I found the article below written on a blog called OC Mom’s Activity Guide.

I’m always on the lookout for super fresh produce with great quality, and if I can catch it at a great deal, fantastic! Well, I’ve found one of those places, located right here in South Orange County. It’s called Sultan Market Place in Lake Forest (just 2 minutes east of I-5), across from the BevMo right by the Fuddruckers.
I have to be honest, I really didn’t know what to expect, but figured I’d pop in and check it out since I’d heard they had fantastic prices and produce that hasn’t spent weeks getting here from a farm (they work to support local farms whenever possible).
The vegetables in Sultan Marketplace were so fresh that they almost didn't look real.
I was a bit intimidated walking in to the market, because it is clearly not the standard type of grocery store, it has a clearly Arabic variety of packaged goods, and I am just not as familiar with Arabic cooking. But, wow! The prices are amazing and the level of quality is great! I didn’t have time to pick up any of the prepared foods, but certainly plan on tasting some of the amazing looking sandwiches the next time I go back (which will be VERY soon!). I bought what seemed to be a ton of groceries (with an emphasis on fruits and veggies) and spent a grand total of $31.00! What a deal. Next time you’re in the area, I’d highly recommend stopping in and checking it out, I promise you’ll become a fan. One part I love is that the produce was obviously fresh because it has stayed fresh far longer than the groceries I buy at “regular” grocery stores.
